Why Measure D Levels?
Vitamin D has been found to be important in protecting the body from a wide range of diseases. Disorders linked with vitamin D deficiency include stroke, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, several forms of cancer, some autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and type I diabetes, and even type 2 diabetes, depression and schizophrenia.

A common factor in vitamin D deficiency is inadequate sun exposure. Vitamin D deficiency is especially problematic for people who spend much of their time indoors, or who live in colder climates. Vitamin D screening has been recommended as a routine part of the annual physical examination. A deficiency may be present even when there are no symptoms, yet it is simple to correct and may solve a number of subclinical health problems and reduce risk for more serious diseases. This test detects deficiencies in Vitamin D, independently monitoring both Vitamin D2 and D3.

It's also important to test after a Vitamin D supplement regimen has been started, so dosing can be moderated as necessary to achieve the desired blood levels.

Advantages of blood spot testing:

  • Less expensive and more convenient than conventional blood draws
  • Nearly painless finger stick is used to collect the few drops of blood required
  • Private and convenient
  • Hormones and other analytes are stable in dried blood spot at room temperature for weeks, allowing for worldwide shipment
